Feelings Are Important, But They Are Not Always Instructions

Feelings Are Important, But They Are Not Always Instructions

Our emotions can provide valuable information. They can warn us, help us process grief, and guide us toward what matters. But when every decision is based only on what “feels right” in the moment, the result may be emotional dysregulation, internal chaos, or choices that create unhealthy consequences.

One helpful first step is simply naming the feeling: “I feel sad.” “I feel angry.” “I feel afraid.” Identifying the emotion can create space between the feeling and the response, allowing us to make a more thoughtful and rational decision.

Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we can begin identifying irrational beliefs, understanding emotional patterns, and developing healthier ways to respond. This work can support stronger self-esteem, greater emotional maturity, and more satisfying relationships.

At Altamura-Roll Counseling, I provide mental health counseling in Flemington, NJ, for individuals from Raritan Township, Clinton, Readington, Ringoes, Lambertville, and nearby Hunterdon County communities. Support is available when you are ready to better understand your emotions and make healthier choices.
